One of the challenges we face in our Womenโs Club is that many of our members are illiterate. They canโt read or write, which makes it difficult for them to follow key parts of our business training.
For example, it is very hard to track business records – like daily income or expenses – if you lack basic literacy skills.
Weโve worked with illiterate and semi-literate women since 2015 and have always adapted our training accordingly. But these adaptations have mostly been ad hoc: tailored on the spot and based on immediate needs.
As Club membership grows, we know that this approach wonโt be enough. We need a more intentional and structured way to support women with low literacy because literacy and entrepreneurship must go hand in hand. So, we’re talking to our team and the women about how to address this.
Because supporting women means meeting them where they are and building from there. This is the work that matters.
